15-year-old admitted to hospital with serious injuries after an accident on I-15 northbound

A 15-year-old was transported to the Intermountain Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after an accident on Interstate 15 heading north on Saturday.

Officials said the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. as traffic slowed at 5500 South on I-15.

While vehicles were slowing down due to traffic jams, a Mazda CX-5 hit the rear of the Mazda 3 in a rear-end collision.

The Mazda 3 then spun counterclockwise and hit the rear of a Honda Civic.

There were three brothers in the Mazda 3, officials said. The passenger and the driver suffered minor injuries. The passenger in the back seat was the 15-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital.

Officials said none of the drivers of the other cars were injured and distracted driving is being investigated as a possible cause of the accident.
