Ogden High football players celebrate a goal in their 4-0 win over Carbon in the quarter-finals of the 3A state tournament on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

OGDEN – Basketball isn’t starting for three weeks, but the Ogden High girls’ soccer team has an early start to the basketball season in their Saturday playoff game against Carbon.

The No. 3 Tigers scored two goals in the first half from rebounds and had several more attempts at rebound shots in a 4-0 win against the No. 6 Dinos and reached the semi-finals of the 3A State Tournament on Thursday October 21st .

Ogden (14-4) defender Sae Obayashi came in for a corner kick early in the first half and actually had the first shot attempt when the ball came in. A defender blocked him for another player, but the shot missed the goalkeeper and Obayashi hit the rebound with the tip of his shoe into the mesh roof.

Celine Buttars scored the 2-0 with a one-time shot into the lower corner. Ruth Larsen conceded Ogden’s third goal with a shot from the bottom corner, and Ajae Belliston converted a rebound that hit her after a deflected cross from the carbon goalkeeper’s foot.

“I think what really worked for us is that the combination works in the back in the first half, we play very well in our defensive line and in midfield,” said Larsen.

In terms of success and tenacity with ricochets, it was the idea that mattered to Ogden.

“Throughout the season, we always have to make sure that we frame the goal, that we are chasing it. I think it’s just very important because those are the easy shots we can take, ”said Larsen of the ricochets.

The win keeps the Tigers’ chances of winning a second state championship in three seasons and playing in the state title game for the third year in a row.

In the semifinals on Thursday (7:30 p.m. Jordan High) they stand in the way of No. 2 Canyon View, who defeated No. 7 Judge Memorial. Canyon View (from Cedar City) beat Carbon twice this year, both times 3-1.

“We’re really excited. We suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the final last year, so I think it’s really important for us to push and get very far again, ”said Larsen.

It only took Ogden the four goals in the first half to beat Carbon on a clear afternoon and the Tigers wanted more in the second half but simply couldn’t score.

Head coach Ryan Robinson spurred the team on in the second half, wanting them to squeeze the ball and play a high line of defense.

They kept shooting, but Carbon’s goalkeeper was directly responsible for keeping at least two shots off the net after her frustrating first half.
