Accident scene at 700 E. 800 North. Road is closed with multiple agencies involved with investigation.

Provo’s 700 North and 800 East was the scene of a multiple-fatality accident Monday morning at the same time children were on their way to nearby Wasatch Elementary School.

Around 8:06 am, a white SUV traveling west on 700 North crossed the eastbound lanes and struck a 9-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother on the sidewalk. The children and the driver, 59-year-old Darren Albertson of Provo, were transported to area hospitals and were pronounced dead. The names of the children have not been released.

Several agencies are on-site investigating the circumstances that lead the SUV to reportedly lose control and cause major damage to gas lines, a parked car and home in the area.

The crash ruptured gas lines in a nearby structure and Dominion Energy is making repairs, according to Capt. Brian Taylor with the Provo Police Department.

“The police department Accident Investigations Team is conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident,” Taylor said.

Provo School District is coordinating grief counseling services for impacted school communities.

“Provo City School District is saddened to hear of the incident that happened this morning. Our crisis response team has responded to the school and is available to provide resources and support to students, families and employees. We will continue to provide these services for as long as necessary. This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with everyone involved,” said Caleb Price, the district’s public information officer.

The crash occurred near the Brigham Young University south campus area.
