BYU football players celebrate with offensive lineman Clark Barrington (56) after a touchdown during the 28-25 Cougar win over Boise State at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019.

One of the rituals of summer is having college football awards organizations start putting out their watch lists and preseason All-American teams for the upcoming season.

Is any one of those groups going to eliminate a player from consideration for a recognition after a great season simply because he wasn’t on the preseason list?

Absolutely not.

No, the watch lists are all about recognizing a combination of past success and future potential.

They can’t see the future, so they have no idea whether a player will struggle or succeed, whether he will stay healthy or get hurt, whether he will be overshadowed by others or be a star.

But since they were good before, they deserve at least some accolades.

That’s the same as with the Countdown to Camp, since the goal of this list is to recognize the players who will impact the upcoming season the most.

It also is predicated on what has happened in the past but that tends to be a good indicator of what might happen moving forward.

The next player on the list has already gotten on multiple preseason All-America lists because he is expected to do big things.

No. 12: Clark Barrington, junior offensive lineman

Barrington continued to get lauded for his past achievements as he was named to two more preseason All-American teams on Monday.

His count is now for, as he is on the. Phil Steele Preseason All-America First Team, the Sporting News 2022 Preseason All-America Second Team, the Lindy’s Sports Preseason All-America Second Team and the Athlon Sports Preseason All-America Third Team.

It’s not surprising, really, since according to the press release, the “6-foot-6, 302-pound left guard started all 13 games for the Cougars in 2021 and was named Pro Football Network All-American Third Team at the conclusion of the season. Barrington, a two-year starter, was also named 2021 Pro Football Network All-Independent First Team and was part of the Pro Football Network Offensive Line of the Year.”

With expectations comes elevated pressure and everyone in Provo and beyond expects Barrington to have an elite season in 2022.
