#22 Pepperdine Men’s Tennis faces road tests at BYU, #20 San Diego

The #22 Pepperdine men’s tennis program prepares for its final West Coast Conference road trip of the season, heading to BYU and #20 San Diego this weekend with first place in the WCC on the line. The winner of Saturday’s match between the Waves and the Toreros, both of whom are undefeated in league play, will take a big step towards securing the league title.

SERIES HISTORY:
Pepperdine has found great success against BYU all-time, holding an 18-2 series lead. However, the Waves are just 2-2 in Provo with the last meeting there coming in 2018.

Pepperdine has met USD 46 times, the most meetings with any WCC opponent, and is 34-12 all-time against San Diego. The schools have met just eight times in San Diego with Pepperdine holding a 5-3 advantage. The Waves are looking for their first win in San Diego since 2012.

WAVES IN THE RANKINGS: As a team, Pepperdine is ranked 22nd in the ITA computer ratings and 16th in the Tennis Channel/USTA college poll. Updated team rankings will be released on Wednesday.

SCOUTING THE WAVES: Pepperdine ground out a pair of conference wins this past week, defeating Portland 4-1 on Saturday and Gonzaga 4-0 on Sunday. Pepperdine swept the weekly awards by the WCC on Tuesday as #15 Daniel De Jonge was recognized as the WCC Singles Player of the Week for a pair of straight-set victories over the weekend, while Enrique Luque Rico and Tim Zeitvogel were honored as the Doubles team of the week The Waves are also represented in the ITA rankings by Zeitvogel (#48), Andrew Rogers (#86) and Pietro Fellin (#87). Updated individual rankings will be released on Wednesday.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: BYU has dropped four of five conference matches thus far, falling to San Francisco and Santa Clara on the road over the weekend. The Cougars’ lone conference win came against Portland in March. No BYU players are ranked by the ITA in either singles or doubles.

The toreros have rolled through the WCC this season, winning six conference matches by a combined score of 24-1. Most recently, they defeated San Francisco and Santa Clara this past weekend. USD has also collected ranked wins over Gonzaga, UCLA, Florida Atlantic, New Mexico, Penn, Wisconsin, Utah and Harvard. The toreros boast one of the nation’s best players in #7 August Holmgren, who won the ITA National Fall Championships in November. Guilherme Osorio is also ranked in singles by the ITA at #119. Holmgren and Osorio are #13 in the ITA doubles rankings.
