3 dead, 1 rescued after gunman barricades himself in home near Salt Lake City

A stalemate that lasted into the second day in a suburb of Salt Lake City ended on Saturday with authorities entering a house and discovering three people, including the suspected shooter who had died from gunshot wounds, authorities said.

The three could be related, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera told reporters on Saturday. Family members appeared to have come to the Millcreek, Utah residence to investigate the 30-year-old suspect on his mental health and firearms, she said.

The shooter had “several firearms and a lot of ammunition,” said Rivera.

Even when the standoff began on Friday, she said, two of the people were likely dead by midnight. It was the suspect who appeared to have shot himself between Friday night and Saturday afternoon when a regional SWAT team walked into the house.

“He was still shooting law enforcement officers last night,” Rivera said.

The stalemate began Friday when someone came to a nearby Unified Police Department station to report gunfire at the residence trapping an “elderly” woman, the sheriff said.

Responding law enforcement agencies saved the woman when they took the fire, Rivera said. MPs and officers did not return fire, she said, and no casualties were reported.

When night fell, authorities tried to speak to the suspect, but he “stopped all negotiations,” Rivera said.

The deceased have been described as women and men in their fifties and as armed men.
