5 new COVID-19 deaths reported; 3,329 cases; 465 hospitalized

Another five Utahners have died of COVID-19, bringing the total in Beehive State to 2,628. The Utah Department of Health also reported 3,329 new confirmed cases as of Friday.

465 people were hospitalized for treatment of the disease. That was 34 more than the week before, although the number has more than doubled in the past two months.

Another 20,683 people were vaccinated in numbers reported Monday.

Testing

Health officials reported that 3,129,977 Utah residents had been tested for the novel coronavirus.

They said 463,204 residents have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began – an increase of 3,329 cases since the numbers were released on Friday. Officials said 1,604 new cases were reported on Friday, 1,129 on Saturday and 601 on Sunday.

There were over 5,500 new cases in the past week.

Of those tested since Friday, 14.5 percent were positive.

The 7-day rolling average for positive tests was 1,263 per day. The seven-day rolling average for percent positive laboratory tests was 15.1 percent – also an increase over the past week.

Including those who were tested more than once, 5,667,115 tests were conducted in the state.

Vaccinations

1,808,951 Utah residents were given at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Anyone over 12 years of age was eligible for the vaccine.

The state has given 3,249,729 first and second vaccinations. Of the vaccinated, 1,575,506 people are fully vaccinated.

According to the health department, 20,683 vaccines have been administered since Friday.

Health officials said 60.8 percent of all Utahns ages 12 and older were fully vaccinated and 69.8 percent had at least one vaccination. Including all Utahns of all ages, 49.1 percent were fully vaccinated.

Almost 3.8 million vaccines have been shipped to the state, meaning nearly 540,000 doses were ready and waiting for those who still need to be vaccinated.

Officials said the state has vaccines from all three approved manufacturers.

The number of people who received a third booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine was not available.

Vaccinated against unvaccinated

Health officials said the risk of dying from COVID-19 in unvaccinated Utahners was 4.9 times higher than vaccinated Utahners in the past 28 days. They also had a 6.2-fold higher risk of hospitalization and a 5.1-fold higher risk of a positive test.

Hospital stays

The health department reported that 465 people were treated for COVID-19 in hospitals across the state. Since the pandemic began, 20,131 people have been hospitalized in Utah.

Utah officials said 85.3 percent of the state’s 531 intensive care beds were occupied. Of these, 178 were used by patients confirmed to have COVID-19. Another five patients in intensive care beds were suspected to have COVID-19 pending further tests.

According to the reported number, there were 393 new hospital admissions in the past week.

Deaths

The Utah Department of Health reported five more COVID-19 deaths since Friday. There have been a total of 2,628 deaths from the disease in Utah since the pandemic began.

All but two of the deceased were male. One was between 25 and 44 years old, one was 85 or older. Four had been hospitalized for treatment before they died.

The identities of those who, according to the state, died of COVID-19 have not been released.

Box Elder County

A Box Elder County resident was between 25 and 44 years old when she died. The woman had been hospitalized.

Her death brought the total to 126 in the area covered by the Bear River Health Department. The area included Cache and Rich Counties.

Salt Lake County

Both Salt Lake County resident deaths were men who were hospitalized. One was between 45 and 64 years old, the other between 65 and 84 years old.

The most populous county in the state has recorded 993 COVID-19 deaths.

Washington County

The other two Utahners who died from the disease were Washington County residents, including a man and a woman.

The woman is between 45 and 64 years old and has not been hospitalized. The man was 85 years or older.

There have been 306 COVID-19 deaths in the area covered by the Southwest Utah Public Health Department, which also includes Beaver, Garfield, Iron and Kane counties.
