Law enforcement fatally shoot man at Uintah County motel

Authorities in northwestern Utah shot and killed a man at a Ballard motel early Friday after the man opened fired at an officer, law enforcement said.

Deputies from the Uintah County Sherif’s office were dispatched to the motel in Ballard at about 3:30 am Friday after reports of a fight, officials said in a news release. Officers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Police assisted the deputies.

Responding law enforcement found a man in the motel room where the disturbance was reported, according to the release.

The man produced a firearm and shot at least one round at authorities — which struck a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer in his ballistic vest. Officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Bureau of Indian Affairs officer was treated at a local hospital and later released, authorities said.

Further details about the shooting or the man’s identity were not released as of Friday afternoon.

The shooting marked the 21st police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune. Officials said the Utah State Bureau of Investigations are investigating the shooting.
