All Latter-day Saint temples in Utah are entering Phase 3

SALT LAKE CITY – After more than 14 months of closure and limited services, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will move 60 temples into phase 3 reopening.

With this change, all living prescriptions as well as a limited number of surrogate prescriptions for deceased ancestors are taken into account by agreement.

Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, the Church had only 27 of its 168 temples open and operating in Phase 3.

The exact dates of the reopening have not yet been announced, but the Church said members will receive an email for the following 60 temples with online reservation instructions in June or July.

In total, all 17 Utah temples that entered Phase 2B in April are slated to enter Phase 3 in the next two months. They are:

  • Generous Utah Temple
  • Brigham City Utah Temple
  • Cedar City Utah Temple
  • Draper Utah Temple
  • Jordan River Utah Temple
  • Logan Utah Temple
  • Manti Utah Temple
  • Monticello Utah Temple
  • Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple
  • Ogden Utah Temple
  • Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple
  • Payson Utah Temple
  • Temple in Provo city center

The Church said, “Temple workers and patrons must take important precautions, including wearing masks at all times, having a limited number of patrons in the temple at one time, minimal temple staff, disinfection after each temple ceremony, careful social distancing and seating arrangements, and temperature control at the entrance.”

What you need to know about phase 3

“As individuals, as families, and as the Church, we are measured by how we treat the weak and disadvantaged in our society,” said Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading around the world, wreaking havoc among the already disadvantaged. Unfortunately, the reactions to the pandemic have become politicized and controversial. Ours doesn’t have to be. As we expect to be doing more vicarious temple ordinances, we are doing for others what they cannot do themselves. Without these blessings, these dead are profoundly disadvantaged.

“The Savior taught that the second great commandment after love of God is,“ You shall love your neighbor as yourself ”. In relation to this pandemic, especially in temples, it means social distancing, wearing a mask, and gathering in large groups. These steps show our love for others and offer us some level of protection. Wearing a face cover is a sign of Christ-like love for our brothers and sisters. “

“We have prayed to return to the temple and looked forward to it with great anticipation,” said Elder David A. Bednar, also of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church. “We appreciate the opportunity to serve and worship in holy temples again, even though our experiences will be different due to the limiting circumstances and additional sacrifices we must make.”
