Amherst’s Annabel Ogen directs “Canes Win Over Pittsfield”

Setter Annabel Ogden distributed 24 assists in an outstanding performance that led the Amherst volleyball offensive on Friday night. The Hurricanes cruised on a 25-10, 25-22, 25-22 sweep from Pittsfield.

“[Ogden] distributed the ball well to a variety of hitters, ”said Amherst coach Kacey Schmitt, who removed three wins out of 300 for their career.

Amherst (2-0) received seven aces from Audrey Bowen and six from Ogden. Eight different players recorded offensive kills, led by Nicole Lambert (six) and Molly Wysocki (four). Liza Beigel collected seven excavations to speed up the defensive.

Limit 3, Lee 0 – Two schools that know a little bit how to play in big games renewed their rivalry on Friday night.

The hosts of the Redhawks did an impressive job at Goodnow High School, defeating Division 3’s perennial rival Lee High School, 25-16, 25-21, 25-12. The two teams met each other in the last five section finals.

Jillian Apanell had a huge mid-night for Frontier (1-0), putting down 11 kills while Lilah Evans added six outside kills. Sam Baker and Caroline Deane were other offensive contributors with three kills each.

Setter Sydney Scanlon amassed 23 assists while the serve attack comprised a total of 16 aces in three sets. Defensively, Tia Gottschalk went to 13 excavations and Brooke Davis joined her in double digits with 10.

Easthampton 3, Mohawk Trail 1 – Kayley Downie’s five kills, six aces and six digs helped the Eagles fall late to a 25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 25-10 independent win over Mohawk Trail in an independent match on Friday.

Setter Delima Fournier dealt 12 assists with four digs and three aces, while Skylar Raskevitz got 15 digs and seven aces in one big outing. Maggie Barr (five kills, three aces), Rina Damon (four aces) and Ajla Mutevelic (three kills) were other important contributions.

Smith Professional 3, Hampden Charter 0 – Heidelex Cordova hit eight aces, and the Vikings rallied 29 as a team en route to a 25-6, 25-14, 25-23 at Hampden Charter on Friday.

Amber Pensivy, Jaycee Beaulieu, and Jordan Dunham all got three kills for Smith Vocational while Yanibel Agosto scored four digs.

Boys soccer

Border 4, Mahar 0 – A pair of Brady Burch walks in the first 20 minutes got the Frontier boys soccer team up and running on Friday, and the Redhawks took care of business from there on their way to a 4-0 win in a Moriarty League Competition on Friday at Herlihy Park in Whately.

Aidan Valderrama scored the 3-0 with a goal in the 26th minute, while Tyler Dubreuil took his second win of the season early in the second half and secured the win. Devin Niles assisted in three of the four Frontier goals when the club left Mahar 23: 7.

Frontier keeper Dylan Martin made three saves to make the shutout, while Mahar’s Tristan Gaj stopped six shots.

Hampshire 2, Chicopee 1 – Grady Fern scored the winning goal for Hampshire on Friday night to a narrow 2-1 win over Chicopee.

Eighth grader Owen Miller also counted for the Raiders, his first career college goal. Ayden St. Martin and Aidan Miklasiewicz provided assists for Hampshire, which led 1-0 at halftime. The club held a 25-7 cross on shots on goal, and goalkeeper Elan Kuntz made six saves.

South Hadley 1, Lenox 0 – Arya Kouzehkanani had the only record of the game with just 2 minutes and 20 seconds remaining to lead the Tigers to a narrow 1-0 win over the millionaires in the Berkshires on Friday night.

Kouzekhanani’s goal came from the top of the 18-meter space and distracted a Lenox defender.

Tyler Evans made five saves to place the South Hadley shutout.

Girls soccer

Belchertown 3, West Springfield 0 – Avery Klingensmith scored one goal and helped another, giving Belchertown a clean 3-0 win over West Springfield on Friday.

Mia Corish and Fallon Clancy scored goals in the first half for the Orioles, who led 2-0 at half time. Klingensmith helped with Clancy’s goal, while Ashley Cunningham took in the helper with Corish’s goal. Klingensmith made with a marker without outside help. Goalkeeper Mabelle Bessette didn’t have to make a save while Jill Debarge made two saves to combine them for the shutout.

South Hadley 4, Pittsfield 1 – Four different players scored goals on Friday to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 win.

South Hadley, who led 2-0 at halftime, received goals from Lauren Marjanski, Drew Alley, Maddie Soderbaum and Naloni Peters. Elyse Manzi, Maggie Evans and Emma Sanford all scored assists as the club outstripped the Generals 23-9.

Tigers keeper Ryleeuchenicz made four saves.

Smith Academy 4, Boy Scouts 1 – Behind a trio of goals from Story Goldman, Smith Academy picked up another win in action on Friday.

Meghan Bell also found the back of the net for the Falcons, who received nine saves from goalkeeper Maddie Bell.

Field hockey

South Hadley 3, Minnechaug 1 – Under the lights on the lawn in South Hadley, the Tigers took an impressive victory in the Suburban League on Friday night.

South Hadley (1-0-1), who led 2-1 at halftime, received goals from Ashley Scott, Meg Carey and Gabi Moroney. Lily Provost scored two assists and Sarah Wojnarowski also chipped an assistant.

Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Lynes made six saves to keep the Falcons at bay.

Langwiese 3, limit 1 – The Redhawks handled a difficult opening week schedule in an impressive manner. Despite their 3-1 loss to Longmeadow on Friday, Frontier entered the suburban league with a 1-1 win.

“I thought it was a really good start to the season for the girls,” said Frontier coach Missy Mahar.

Longmeadow led 2-0 at halftime on Friday and 3-0 in the fourth quarter before Shelby Clark broke the shutout with a goal from Rebecca Wallace-West. Frontier keeper Ella Flanders made nine saves.

Belchertown 20.5, Ludlow 3.5 – Five of the six Orioles won their games on Friday when Belchertown stormed off with a 20½-3½ triumph over Ludlow at The Orchards in South Hadley.

Ryan O’Neal, 39, Riley Breen, 41, Tyler McDonald, 44 and Brady Perkins, 45 each scored four points in the No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 games respectively. Ben Anderson shot a 48 in the # 4 position and Henry Poissant shot a 48 in the # 6 position for Belchertown.

Monson 15, boundary 9 – Cam Skiffington and Addy Wood took three points each, finishing fifth and sixth on the line-up, but Frontier’s visit dropped Monson Friday at Quaboag Country Club a 15-9 decision.

Skiffington shot 47, a shot from the low round of the day for the Redhawks, which was recorded by Alex Gochinski in 1 (46). Ryan Cetto shot 49 and won a point for Frontier.

Hampshire 19, Mohawk Trail 5 – Levi Zielinski was the match medalist in 1st place, scoring 41 to get all four points against Mohawk Trail in a match on Friday at Edge Hill Golf Course.

Owen Lech and Brayden Fennessey shot 49 each for the Raiders. Nicky Elias-Gillette won all four points in his match in second place.

Hopkins 15, Easthampton 9 – A strong performance from Connor Asselin, who shot the low round of the day (41), drove the Golden Hawks past the Eagles at Holyoke Country Club.

Taylor Barry and Christian Ciolkos both shot 49 for Hopkins, which improved to 2-1 that season.

Easthampton’s Mikey Thompson led his team with a 45 and scored 2½ points in his match in 3rd place.

Langwiese 15, Amherst 9 – Piet Hartman shot a straight par 35 to take all four points in his first place match in the Hurricanes on Friday at Amherst Golf Club.

Hartman’s lap included a par 4 eagle on the eighth hole.

Chase Lashway shot 38th in second place and won 3½ points for Amherst. Ben Oates scored a round of 46 in 3rd place, while Ben Scott scored a point in 5th place.
