Anglers wanted: fish Flaming Gorge derbies, win prizes.

Fishing at Flaming Gorge Reservoir will be fun and potentially profitable for anglers who have signed up for one or more of the fishing competitions scheduled this winter. Two of the competitions are aimed at the rich population of small lake trout in the reservoir and the third competition is aimed at burbot. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) is working with the Derby sponsors and encouraging anglers to target these species to aid the trout, salmon and trout lake trout fisheries in the reservoir. Anglers are reminded that they must register to compete for money and prizes in each of these competitions.

Two competitions sponsored by Buckboard Marina target the abundance of small lake trout in the reservoir. The pupation control competition began on October 20 and runs through June 12, 2022. The competition has multiple prize categories, including payouts for submitting marked sea trout. In preparation for the event, WGFD marked 100 lake trout less than 25 inches for competition this fall. For information on this competition, click here. You can find more information, rules and a tab to register. With your registration fee, you will also be entered into a raffle for a Camp Chef donated Camp Chef pellet grill ($ 500 value) or a cash donation of $ 500 from Buckboard Marina. Buckboard also sponsors the Pupulation Domination competition February 12-13, 2022. This competition will test anglers’ skills as teams battle to catch the most pounds of lake trout less than 25 inches in two days. Further information on the Pupulation Domination Contest 2022 will be published shortly.

After all, the Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce, Mountain America Credit Union and Christenson’s Lakeshore Tackle are sponsoring the ever-popular Burbot Bash from January 28-30, 2022. Thanks to the great sponsorship, Bash has big cash payouts and tons of other prizes, largest, smallest, and tagged tadpole categories for most. Visit burbotbash.com or www.facebook.com/BurbotBash for rules and online registration starting December 28th. You may be asking, “Why is the Wyoming Game and Fish Department working with the contest sponsors?” The Department sees these partnerships as a great opportunity to spread the word about the abundance of small lake trout and burbot in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir and why we are concerned. Game and Fish Green River Fisheries biologist John Walrath said, “We are concerned about the impact that small lake trout and tadpoles are having on the other fisheries in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, namely trout, salmon, perch and trout lake trout.” According to Walrath, Game and Fish primarily concerned about the number of young trout and salmon these predators are consuming. A reduction in the number of young trout and salmon in the reservoir means that anglers can catch fewer adult trout and salmon and look for less food for trout lake trout. Anglers can find out more about reservoir management concerns, tips on catching each species, how to cook them, and newsletters to help them learn here. Anglers can purchase a copy of the Wyoming Fishing Regulations from any Game and Fish regional office, from most license vendors, or at wgfd.wyo.gov.
