Boys Discover Hidden Machete At Provo River Bottoms Park

PROVO, Utah – Two brothers discovered a machete while exploring a park in the Provo River Bottoms area. The family warned others of the hidden dangers that can exist, even in places that appear very safe.

Tonya Hamill said her boys, 11-year-old Micah and 9-year-old Otto, were searching a dry creek bed in Riverview Park – 4620 North and 300 West – when they discovered the machete hidden under a footbridge.

“I see her carrying like a knife,” said Hamill, who at first didn’t believe the big knife was real. “I said, ‘Oh my god, where did you get that from?'”

Hamill said the blade appeared to be at least 12 inches long and Micah said it appeared to be relatively sharp.

“I thought,” What if there is evidence of a crime? “Said the mother.” I had no idea!

After collecting the machete, Hamill was asked by her 11-year-old to call the police.

“I usually see this guy on YouTube. If he finds something like a gun underwater, he always turns it over to the police,” said Micah Hamill. “I thought about it. That’s what i did I told my mother to call the police. “

The family gave the machete to Provo police.

“Even the cop said, ‘Wow, that’s pretty scary!'” Hamill said.

Police generally advise children in such situations to alert an adult and contact officials if the adult believes the item found is a hazard.

A police spokesman said the machete was recorded as found property as evidence.

Hamill said what happened highlights the importance of keeping track of children where and with what they are playing.

“A small child could have found it and caused damage,” said Hamill.
