Catch trout and win prizes in the Mac Attack Derby in Flaming Gorge | Local

GREEN RIVER – Anglers can hone their mackinaw fishing skills and watch them compete against others for cash prizes during the Mac Attack Fishing Derby at the Flaming Gorge Reservoir from April 24-25.

The competition is aimed at lake trout under 25 inches. Prizes will be awarded for most of the pounds of lake trout entered during the two-day derby. The Mac Attack is open to both boat and coastal anglers. Lake trout forage near the coast during the spring, which will make the anglers competitive in this derby, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

The Derby was created to aid the Flaming Gorge fishery by targeting certain lake trout. The smaller mackinaw eat other prized species in the gorge such as kokanee salmon and trout. Reducing the number of small lake trout in the reservoir will increase the number of kokanee and other trout available to anglers and allow the remaining lake trout to grow faster. The angler’s harvest can be a powerful tool for fisheries management. The Mac Attack Derby will help reduce the population of small lake trout and provide a platform to educate the public about this growing problem.

Teams can compete for cash prizes by entering up to 12 lake trout (less than 25 inches) per angler per day. The winners are the teams that have the most weight. Online registration is available at: [www.flaminggorgecountry.com/mac-attack-2021]www.flaminggorgecountry.com/mac-attack-2021.

The teams must register by April 18th at the latest. All participants must have a valid fishing license and comply with all Wyoming and Utah regulations regarding fishing, inspection of boats with invasive aquatic species, and boating.

Two fish weighing locations are open on both days from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the large yellow tent of Buckboard Marina in Wyoming and in the parking lot of the Lucerne Marina Store in Utah. Fish must be checked every day of the tournament. Fish caught on Saturday must be reported on Saturday. They cannot be entered on Sunday with the fish caught on Sunday. Weighing-in closes punctually at 5 p.m.

Attendees are reminded that lake trout is a wild fish and small lake trout is a great table. Take good care of them and enjoy eating them. It is prohibited for a person to intentionally and unnecessarily waste or leave, give up or allow wild fish or edible parts.
