Charges: Man attempts to carjack 2 vehicles, leads police on 100 mph chase in Utah County

PROVO – A Springville man accused of stealing a vehicle, attempting to steal a second, and leading police in a wildcat chase that injured an officer, was accused of several crimes to have.

Tyson Blaine Gurr, 35, was tried in the 4th District Court on Friday on two serious robberies, a first degree felony. and not to stop on the orders of the police, a third degree crime.

On Tuesday, Gurr ran away from Provo police after allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident. He approached a man and tried to steal his car. Gurr “tried to hit the man but failed to connect,” the charges state.

The man hit back and threw Gurr to the ground. Gurr then ran away and tried to steal a second vehicle, according to the indictments.

At the Glenwood Apartments, 1565 N. University Ave., Gurr jumped into the back seat of an occupied vehicle and told the driver that he fled the police to give him the car and that he “didn’t want to hurt them” charges the state.

After stealing that car, an Orem police officer parked his patrol car at 1560 East 800 North near Provo Canyon to see if the stolen vehicle would go in his direction, which it did. A chase ensued when Gurr refused to drive by.

“Officers continued to pursue (Gurr) and reached speeds of 100 miles per hour to 800 East,” the indictments read.

Near 1600 North and Bowl Drive, Gurr crashed into a large bush, got out of his car, and ran. He was running “down an extremely steep hill” which the prosecution said was wet and muddy from rain earlier that day. Officers chasing Gurr slipped trying to walk down the hill, one officer breaking his ankle.

“When the officers reached the foot of the hill, they saw how the defendant got into a thick grove of bushes and trees,” the indictments say. “The brush was so thick that the officers soon lost (Gurr). A large number of officers from the surrounding agencies and K9s were there, but (Gurr) was not found.”

A few hours later, Gurr contacted the police and reportedly turned himself in.
