COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Zags give up a big lead; WSU falls after a long journey

Gonzaga led 17 points late in the first half, but UC Davis roared from behind in the second half to surprise the Zags at 69-66 to 726 at the University Credit Union Center in Davis, California on Sunday.

Melody Kempton, a Post Falls High senior, led Gonzaga (8-3) with 14 points. She also had six rebounds and two steals. Kempton now has 400 career rebounds at Gonzaga.

Yvonne Ejim scored 12 points, Kaylynne Truong 11 for the Bulldogs, junior Kayleigh Truong, who had survived an injury, scored nine points and four assists in just 17 minutes.

Senior Abby O’Connor had seven rebounds at team level and Kaylynne Truong led the team with five assists.

The Zags led after the first quarter with 21:17 behind Kaylynne Truongs eight points, including 2 to 2 from beyond the arc.

In the half, Gonzaga was leading 40-25, beating the Aggies 22-6.

In the fourth quarter, the Zags were held by eight points and went 1 to 13 off the field.

Gonzaga had a chance to level the game in the final seconds when Ejim stole the ball with four seconds remaining, but a 3-point attempt from Kaylynne Truong fell short.

Gonzaga shot 40.4 percent out of the field.

Cierra Hall scored 22 points, Evanne Turner 20 for UC Davis (6-4).

Gonzaga plays in Eastern Washington on Tuesday.

Stony Brook 69, Washington State 62: In Stony Brook, NY, the Cougars battled the Seawolves all afternoon in game two of a 24-hour track against teams that played in last season’s NCAA tournament.

The game included 13 draws and five leadership changes. The teams were tied with 57 points after WSU (8-3) junior Grace Sarver scored a 3-point field goal with 5:08 in the game. Stony Brook scored 12 of the game’s last 17 points to give the Cougars a seven-point loss to wrap up the WSU’s two-day cross-country trip in two games.

The Cougs played at BYU in Provo, Utah on Saturday and then flew cross-country to play in New York on Sunday.

Sophomore Charlisse Leger-Walker scored a team high of 19 points, collected five rebounds, distributed five assists and added three steals for the WSU.

Bella Murekatete, a junior from Genesis Prep Academy in Post Falls, had five points and 13 rebounds for the WSU.

Senior Krystal Leger-Walker and junior Johanna Teder each took nine points, while Sarver from the bench added seven points.

Earlette Scott scored 20 points for Stony Brook (9-1).

“I think it was a great situation for us to come here and play,” said WSU coach Kamie Ethridge. “I think it took us a while to get started, probably because of the trip we were on. They made a few more winnings than we did. We didn’t shoot the ball well. I think the team that played more games won the game. I am not overly disappointed. “

The WSU returns home against California on December 31st.

Nevada 71, Eastern Washington 60: In Seattle, the Eagles (2-7) led after three quarters with 49-48 before they were up against the wolf pack (8-3) in the Husky Classics.

Jaydia Martin led Eastern with 18 points.

Da’Ja Hamilton led Nevada with 16 points.
