The governor of North Carolina annually honors individuals and groups of people who have made meaningful contributions to their community through their volunteer service.

Nominations are submitted to the Governor’s Office for the various types of volunteer (Seniors, Youth, Faith, Family, Groups, and Corporations) as well as for various categories based on the service area of ​​a nominated volunteer (Animal, Environment). , Conservation, youth, disaster, etc.). Once district award coordinators across the state have submitted their top 10 volunteer nominations for their individual district, those recommendations are reviewed by the commission and the awards are presented in each of the districts.

On May 12, 2021, Larry Ogden, President of the Hatteras Island Community Emergency Response Team, received the prestigious Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service of North Carolina for his leadership and dedication to the organization. Ogden was honored for receiving the award – the highest volunteer in North Carolina – during the 2021 Governor’s Medallion Award ceremony, held virtually from Raleigh.

The individual winners of the 2021 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award in Dare County are Angelo and Gail Sonnesso with the GEM Adult Day Services program; Marcia Lyons with the Friends of Youth program; Beth Pallett with the Dare County Center and its Food on Wheels program; Dee Ann Baum with Feline Hope; Rehab Otte with the Dare County Center; Brianne Clark Perry with the Dare County Baseball Program; as well as eight volunteers at the Restaurant to Reef Oyster Shell Recycling Program: John Thomas, Bill Trimyer, Paul Kutsko, Alyson Flynn, Michael Serbouse, Ivy Cage, Bill Akiss and Don Brady.
