Dixie, Hurricane advance with blowouts – St George News

ST. GEORGE – The 4A State softball tournament threw its first place in its first round on Tuesday. Three Region 9 teams claimed the field to get the brace going and two walked away victorious.

The Dixie Flyers and Hurricane Tigers will move into the second round starting Friday after beating their respective opponents on Tuesday afternoon. Pine View, who lost on the road in the singles elimination round.

The seven remaining Region 9 teams will begin the best-of-three second round of the tournament on Friday. The teams play the first game on Friday and the second (and possibly three) game on Saturday. Three Region 9 teams – Snow Canyon, Canyon View and Crimson Cliffs – will host the second round before the survivors move to Spanish Fork for the final rounds of the tournament.

Here are the recaps of the first round games on Tuesday and the schedule for the second round games on Friday:

No. 13 Dixie 17, No. 20 Logan 2

The Flyers offensive erupted when Dixie hit her ticket for the second round.

They piled up nine runs in the first and eight in the second to beat the Grizzlies in three innings on the 15-run grace rule. They had scored six runs when they were first released.

Vanessa Scarborough led the charges by hitting two 3v3 home runs, driving in six and scoring three runs. Jamelle Mullins also had three hits, including one of Dixie’s total of five doubles.

Debra Tofi went 2-1 with two RBIs and threw all three innings on the hill. She allowed three hits: two singles against Abbey Hart and a triple against Kaitlyn Leto.

“It was honestly just a kind of punch,” said Dixie head coach Whitney Gust. “We just got the ball into play when we scored a good goal and used the things we needed.”

Logan scored in the second round after advancing a leadoff walk on a strikeout and scoring a mistake. Leto’s triple scored Hart in the third inning and the Grizzlies got almost close enough to continue playing, but a suicide attempt failed and Leto was kicked out at home.

Tofi got a fly and a strike to end the competition.

Now Dixie has another challenge against Canyon View # 4, an opponent from Region 9. The Flyers lost both regular season games to the Falcons: 10-3 on March 30th and 20-9 on April 1st.

“We’ll just work hard and give everything in the next few days of training,” said Gust. “We played really well against them, so I don’t think anyone can underestimate a team that goes both ways. I have a feeling we’ll be ready to play and do the best we can. “

The first place on Friday in Cedar City is scheduled for 4 p.m.

No. 15 Hurricane 12, No. 18 Ogden 2

At Hurricane, the home Tigers defeated the Ogden Tigers 12-2 in five innings.

After pulling the page back at the top of the first, starting pitcher Chantell Pearson drove in Hurricane’s first run with a single at the bottom of the inning. Immediately afterwards, two more runs followed due to an error.

Hurricane added five more runs in the second round that ended in a double game.

Hurricane led 10-0 after three innings, but Pearson was knocked out with two in the top quarter shortly after Ogden’s first run. Reliever Annie Hutchings went two batters before pulling out the third when a runner tried to steal home.

At the end of fourth place, Hutchings tripled left, scoring Rylee Fox and pushing the Tigers’ lead back to 10 runs, meaning the grace rule would apply if they could prevent Ogden from scoring near the top of fifth.

Hutchings took the first punch in the fifth inning but made the next one come out. Two consecutive strikes followed to end the game.

“Our team was focused and ready to go,” said Hurricane head coach Chris Hurst after the game. “We met immediately. Our goal was good, our defense was solid and we had one mistake throughout the game. “

Hurst said that both Pearson and Hutchings “struggled a little with their command” and a total of five batters went together.

“We have to clean this up, but they persevered,” he said. “You did it.”

Next up for Hurricane is a trip to Bear River, where they compete against the number 2 bears in a best-of-three series on Friday and Saturday.

Hurst acknowledged that Bear River is a “very good” team, but added, “We have played a lot of good teams in this region. And there were games where we were ahead of some of those teams. Snow Canyon, we went 5-2 into fifth and Crimson, they beat us 3-2. I mean, if we play well, we’re confident we can play with anyone. “

No. 16 Green Canyon 12, No. 17 Pine View 2

The Panthers will be the only team in Region 9 that does not advance to the second round of the tournament after a victory by the Wolves under the grace rule.

Pine View scored the first hit but watched the offensive at Green Canyon build up steam as the game progressed, culminating in a six breakout in the sixth inning that gave the Wolves the win.

The Panthers sprayed four hits, all singles, over the six offensive innings and drew four walks. Chaisey Milne, Avery Gustin and Megan Benshoof each walked 1: 2. Benshoof also had an RBI. Milne scored a run and had an RBI while setting up the entire game.

Milne took a run-up walk to start the game before advancing on one bunt, stealing the third, and stealing home. Green Canyon returned in the second inning, scoring a pair. Pine View scored her second run in the fifth, which at that point earned 2-3 points. The Wolves scored three hits in the lower half to retreat.

Annika Eborn scored a mistake at the end of sixth place and gave Green Canyon the 12th run and a 10-run lead, which activated the grace rule.

Pine View ends at 4:20 in the year after 0:14 in the region.
