Driver dies in rollover crash on Redwood Road in Salt Lake City

The intersection of Redwood Road and California Ave. “will be closed for some time” Thursday afternoon after a fatal crash, police said.

Salt Lake City police have confirmed that a driver was killed in a vehicle rollover at the intersection.

Police chased a car they believed had been stolen and tried to stop it when the driver fled, Det. Michael Ruff told SLCPD. Officer not followed, said Ruff.

When the driver fled, the car left the road and crashed. They were taken to a local hospital where they died from their injuries.

One passenger in the car was not injured and was taken into police custody.

Detectives are working to determine if the car was actually stolen, Ruff said.

Initially, the lanes south of Redwood Road were closed, but the closure has been extended. Traffic cameras in the area showed backups to Indiana Ave. The drivers were advised to avoid the area and use a different route if possible.
