Craig Ogden loved art from an early age.
“From the beginning of my school days, art was my thing,” said the Noblesville resident, an Illinois native, whose work is currently on display at two Fishers art exhibitions, one with an artist reception on Friday night.
“In third grade I had a great art teacher who stayed after school so I could sit on the floor of her office and draw pictures on large pieces of paper. She took the trouble to have my drawings exhibited in the library. “
After taking art classes in high school, he attended and graduated from Herron School of Art. During his fourth year at Herron, he started a graphic design company in his basement. He built his business over the next 23 years, hiring “all of the great young talent from Herron,” he said. “We did very original work and often included art paintings and drawings in our corporate publications.”
After his time in the graphic design industry, he concentrated on his illustration and painting for a few years.
But he became frustrated and had no orientation.
So he took a 10 year hiatus.
During this time he changed jobs and developed his hobby – collecting antiques, old toys and signs – into a business.
He and his wife Tonya bought the Noblesville Antique Mall and ran it for eight years. (They have three creative children, Evan, Abigail, and Avery.
“The antique industry has changed a lot so we sold the mall and focused on selling full-time online,” said Ogden, who moved from Fishers to Noblesville about four years ago.
Five years later, he and his wife started a new boutique store in downtown Noblesville called The Mix Vintage and New Marketplace. The store offers new and vintage home decor, clothing, and furniture.
Two years ago, Ogden took out the colors and set up a small corner studio at home. Since then he has been painting almost every day and has completed more than 100 paintings.
Ogden’s work is abstract expressionism. “I paint with acrylics because they dry quickly and have a very hard surface,” he says.
Ogden has about four different styles that he paints at random. “Some looser and some more intricate.”
He said, “My subject can be almost anything, but I really enjoy painting figures, large crowds and faces.”
Many of his works are very abstract works with very random lines on solid forms.
Since the rebirth of his painting, Ogden has shown his work in various exhibitions and galleries. In February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Ogden had his first solo exhibition on the Nickel Plate Arts Campus in downtown Noblesville. His exhibition “Different Eyes” comprised 40 pieces and challenged the viewer to “look at abstract art with new eyes”.
Ogden looks forward to the adventures ahead.
One of Ogden’s exhibitions opened with an artist reception last Friday, the Hamilton County Artists’ Association & Craig Ogden Artist’s Reception, scheduled for 6pm to 8pm this Friday at Fishers City Hall. The second exhibition opened on Wednesday at Meyer Najem Construction and will last until September 28th. His work in the latter exhibition is entitled “The First Two Years” and comprises 45 abstract paintings, all of which were created during Ogden’s first two years of painting.
“It’s an exciting time to be an artist,” he said. “The world is constantly changing and how people treat each other will always be a new and changing theme in painting.”
Ogden said, “I am grateful to be able to express what I see and feel and to share it with those who enjoy my art.”
