From the Comal County Fair to local gardening classes, there’s plenty to do in New Braunfels in September

As fall approaches, several annual events return to New Braunfels in addition to new celebrations and activities. Below are just a few of the local events scheduled for September.

September 11th: Remember the events of September 11th, 2001

To mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the City of New Braunfels will hold a ceremony in the Main Plaza in downtown New Braunfels. The event kicks off at 7:35 a.m. when members of the local fire department and the Police Honor Guard march from the downtown fire station to the main square. The ceremony in the main plaza begins at 7:46 am and includes the raising and lowering of the American flag by half of the staff, an invocation, remarks from local dignitaries, and a performance by the New Braunfels Firefighters Pipes and Drums. Sept 11th: Run through the green

Join other runners on a 5K or 10K run through Gruene. The race starts in front of the Gruene Hall and participants can enjoy music, food and beer from Guadalupe Brewing Co. after the run. 6:45 a.m. (package pick-up), 8 a.m. (5 km and 10 km start), 9 a.m. (children’s run).

September 11th: Learn more about air pressure

Children from kindergarten through third grade learn how to deal with air pressure in our everyday lives. Participants will conduct experiments and activities to gain an understanding of barometric pressure. 10-11am $ 3 (Headwaters youth: supporters and contributors), $ 4 (Headwaters youth: family level), $ 5 (general admission). September 14th: See a movie

Gruene Hall hosts the 15th annual Fly Fishing Film Tour for guests of all ages. The films include stories from around the world, including Russia, the Guyana rainforest, French Polynesia, and Utah’s Flaming Gorge. 6 p.m. (doors open), 7 p.m. (film starts). September 14th: Prioritize learning about nature

The Comal County Conservation Alliance will host a virtual program called Prioritizing Nature’s Role in Building Resilience. Guest speaker Suzanne Scott, Texas Director of The Nature Conservancy, will speak about the Conservancy’s work to promote the role of nature in reducing floods, improving water quality and protecting biodiversity through land conservation. 6-7.30 p.m. Free of charge. www.comalconservation.org

Sept. 16: Try what green has to offer

Visit The Grapevine Garden for a sample of Texas wine and beer. Sep 18: Enjoy a fiesta

The Fiesta Patria is hosted on the grounds of the Sophienburg Museum and includes a taco food truck, mariachis, freshly made salsa, a performance of Ballet Folklorico, and more. Entry to the museum is free during the event, and guests can view an exhibition of past Diez Y Seis events in New Braunfels. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Free of charge. 401 W. Sept. 18: Maintain a local garden

As part of the Headwaters’ Native Landscaping 101 series, attendees take a tour of the grounds to see a native landscape at work and learn about the area’s most easy-care native plants. Experts from the Native Plant Society of Texas-New Braunfels Chapter will lead portions of the workshop, and attendees are encouraged to bring a basic sketch of their garden to help plan where to include native species in the home. 12: 30-14: 00 $ 15 (Headwaters member family: supporter and contribution level), $ 18 (Headwaters members: family level), $ 20 (general admission per family). September 22nd: Learn to build a rain barrel

Community members are invited to the Headwaters on Comal to learn how to make a rain barrel for the home garden. 22.-26. September: Attend the Comal County Fair

After the 2020 fair was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 127th Comal County Fair & Rodeo starts on September 22nd in New Braunfels. The fair includes the annual rodeo, cattle shows, stalls and more. The times vary depending on the date. Free (ages 5 and under), $ 5 (ages 6-11), $ 10 (ages 12 and up). September 23: Learn to support people with Alzheimer’s disease

During EdenHill Communities’ third annual Alzheimer’s Symposium, attendees will learn how to support Alzheimer’s sufferers and their carers. September 24: Watch the Comal County Fair Parade

Sept 25th: Take a hike

Take part in Fun Walking Tours of New Braunfels to experience the beauty and history of Landa Park. During this 2-mile hike, participants will hear stories about the people who made Landa Park what it is today and discover the park’s natural treasures. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. $ 20. Sept. 30th to Oct. 2nd: Start your Christmas shopping

To start shopping for the holiday season, head to the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center for the New Braunfels Hollydays Market. Over 100 vendors will be in attendance and buyers will have the opportunity to win door prizes, snap photos in a photo booth, and enjoy food and drinks. 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. (September 30), 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (October 1 – 2).
