Gunfire with officials was reported in Vernal

VERNAL, Utah – Authorities reported an overnight shooting on Main Street in Vernal involving an officer.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m., according to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office.

MPs, along with Vernal police, responded to a request to contact a man on probation, the authorities said. When they found the person, he reportedly hid his hands before proceeding on the officers.

According to a statement from UCSO, authorities believed the man was hiding a gun, so at least one of the officers fired shots.

The suspect survived and is on remand at a local hospital. Officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Utah County detectives are on their way to Vernal to conduct the investigation, according to a UCSO update. Main Street Vernal is expected to remain closed from 500 West to 700 West until at least noon.
