Harry E Jones
September 7, 1933 to July 12, 2022
Harry E. Jones, 88, passed away July 12, from natural causes at his home in Salt Lake City, surrounded by his loving wife, children, their spouses and grandchildren.
Harry was born in Miles City, Montana Sept. 7, 1933 to Dr. Everett and Dorothy Jones. He grew up with two brothers and one sister in Boise, Idaho and graduated from Boise High School in 1951.
An ardent American, Harry joined the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. He ranked Corporal Meritorious in Communications and was extraordinarily proud of his service to his country.
Harry graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Golda Long, on March 25, 1961 in Salt Lake City, Utah where they raised three wonderful children.
Of Harry’s many accomplishments, his friends will remember him as an exceptional ski racer. He enjoyed competing in downhill, slalom, giant slalom (his favorite) as well as ski jumping while serving on the ski teams of Boise High School, University of Colorado Boulder, and later for his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, at the University of Utah.
His career spanned 34 years at Hercules, Inc., where he worked as a highly respected computer scientist in the defense/aerospace industry. As Superintendant of Scientific Computations, Harry’s keen insight allowed for great progress into the new world of computer technology. He developed complex mathematical computer programs to optimize rocket motors.
In addition to Harry’s talents in skiing and computer science, he found love and happiness with his wife, Golda, and teaching their three young children how to ski 63-days-a-year at Park West (The Canyons). All became proficient skiers.
He was deeply proud of his career, marriage of 62 years to his beloved wife, Golda and his 3 children, all who graduated from the University of Utah and have had successful careers and families.
In lieu of flowers, we suggest a contribution to CNS Home Health and Hospice whose gifted and compassionate team of caretakers provided Harry and his family with peace and comfort during his last weeks of life at home.
Also thanks to Father Eric of St. Ambrose for performing promptly and comforting Last Rites of the Catholic Church as well as the cardiology unit at the University of Utah Medical Center.
A private Funeral Mass at St. Ambrose Catholic Church will be held for Harry followed by a burial with Military Honors at Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
