A heartbroken mother has issued a warning to parents after her ‘happiest little boy’ died when he was strangled by a blind cord while playing at home.

One-year-old Kane Davidson suffered a fatal brain injury after getting caught in the cord as he was playing with his big brother at his family’s house in Oldham in January this year.

The baby boy was found by his mother Natasha Ogden, who had initially thought he was playing hide and seek before discovering the devastating truth.

Despite the best efforts of medics Kane, who would have been two in March, died several days later in the hospital.

Last week an inquest at Rochdale Coroner’s Court ruled his death was ‘accidental’, and now Ms Ogden has issued a warning to parents to try and stop the same thing infesting other families.

She said: ‘It’s something you think will never happen to you. It’s something you read in the news or magazines.

‘You might not see it as danger but you need to make sure you tie them away from your children. It’s not mandatory for them to be checked but it should be.’

Her chilling screams were heard by neighbors after she found Kane unresponsive and tangled up in the cord at her home in Greenacre, Oldham, on January 28.

The inconsolable mother was helped by a neighbor who desperately tried to resuscitate the toddler as they waited for paramedics who were rushing to the scene.

However, tragically he could not be saved as he had suffered a cardiac arrest caused by asphyxiation and hypoxic brain injury – which is when the brain does not get enough oxygen.

He was put into a coma and died days later on February 1 at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Speaking in February, Ms Ogden said she would never celebrate her birthday again after her and Kane’s dad, Callum Davidson, turned off her son’s life support machine the day after she turned 23.

It was a tragic end to what had been a normal day in their house, with Kane playing with his older brother Callum.

Ms Ogden said she went to the toilet and when she came back she couldn’t here her normally ‘very loud’ boy.

‘I saw his reflection in the window in the front bedroom,’ she told the Manchester Evening News.

‘I thought he was playing hide and seek but I moved the curtain and he wasn’t.’

She added she thought her son could have become caught in the blind after climbing up onto the window sill while ‘messing about’, before slipping.

The heartbroken mum said there were no fittings on the wall to tie the blind cords up, and said she would not go back to the rented home where the incident took place.

Paying tribute to him, Ms Ogden said: ‘Kane made the family. He was really cheeky and happy all the time.

‘He was just the happiest little boy you would ever meet. Batman was his favorite. As soon as he smiled, everybody else would.’
