High school boys tennis: Crimson Cliffs captures school’s first state title

The first state championship in Crimson Cliffs High School’s brief history is likely to be remembered for the singles titles of Max Miner, Zachary Sodorff, and Liam Duffin. After all, coach Colin Brown said that should be all the mustangs would need to sew the team title.

That may have been true, but Brown was able to rest a little easier on Saturday because his doubles team tandem of Jacob Brown and Jack Hodges also earned a few extra points.

In the end, it was enough for the Mustangs to earn 20 points and hold Logan, 16, at the 4A State Tourney in Liberty Park on a warm, cloudy afternoon. Pine View took third place with 10 points, and Dixie and Green Canyon each came in ninth.

Although the schools in southern Utah have a distinct weather advantage, the schools in Cache Valley did not quietly give up.

The Grizzlies rode the Xu family’s talents – Senior Ashton and newbies Caleb and Phillip – to take the lead after day one, and also felt confident enough to deftly invite the Jazz Bear for post-tournament celebrations, but Brown said his team’s talent level hadn’t worried him.

“They took care of the business,” said Brown, whose team finished behind Dixie in his regional tournament last week but earned the Seed No. 1 in all three individual players. “We got the points from these guys, but we needed a little more.”

Sodorff and Duffin each won straight-set matches against Logan opponents along the way, and on the bus ride back to St. George, Brown probably had plenty of time to remember how everything had to go the Mustangs way with it they could earn and then celebrate the success. In addition to the trophy, he admitted that a police escort was set up to greet the team when they returned home.

Logan’s plans didn’t go too well, but the Grizzlies may want to keep the jazz bear on the speed dial. With Crimson Cliffs hoping for a reload, the Xu brothers should be back next year as well, and Caleb and Phillip gained plenty of experience in both Saturday’s games, beating their opponents from Green Canyon and Pine View in long games by three sets, which the announcement says The last team scored until most of the other schools were gone.
