High school girls golf: Pine View leads 4A state tourney after Day 1, Dixie’s Annabelle Millard only golfer to shoot under par

With a strong opening day at the 4A State tournament on Wednesday, the Pine View girls’ golf team has placed themselves in a great position to try to claim their first state title in school history.

The Panthers start Day 2 at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Taylorsville with an 18-shot lead over regional opponent Dixie after scoring 332 points on Day 1. Dixie is in second place with 350 strokes, followed by Juan Diego in third with 356 and Desert Hills in fourth with 357.

Ridgeline is the defending national champion after winning the 2019 national championship and is fifth with Green Canyon at 364.

Freshman Alyssa Butterfus led Pine View with a 73, teammate Hallie Wieland with an 80, Kenzi Owen with 84 and Katelyn Leavitt with 92. All four are in the top 20 after the opening round.

Butterfus was 3-over after 10 holes on Wednesday, but she screwed numbers 14 and 15 to switch to 1-over for her opening round.

Butterfus is in second place with Hurricane’s Ellie Johnson, but both are two strokes behind Region 9 medalist Annabelle Millard after being the only female golfer to shoot under par in the opening round.

Millard finished fourth as a freshman and is two strokes ahead of the finals after closing with two consecutive birdies on the par 3 17th and par 5 18.
