Increased patrols on Uintah High after a possible shot was reported

VERNAL, Utah – The Uintah County Sheriff’s office is conducting additional patrols around Uintah High School on Wednesday after school staff reported they heard a gunshot this morning when they reported for work.

Guards who entered through the back of the high school around 4:30 a.m. reported hearing what sounded like a .22 caliber shot and a ricochet.

The sheriff’s deputies and Vernal police responded to the school and conducted a search, but found nothing. The area behind the school consists of open fields and farmland.

Out of great caution, the Uintah School District has decided to cancel all morning activities and exercises at the high school.

But at 8:50 am, the sheriff’s office gave the all-clear to resume student activities and exercises at Uintah High School.

Students should check with their coach or counselor about their plans for today.

Summer school students should contact their teachers for instructions.

All activities and exercises will resume on Thursday as planned.

MPs continue to investigate the incident and will be present on campus throughout the day.
