GOWRIE – Cooper Nuss took silver here on his home course on Thursday night and waited for a long lightning delay at his homestanding Southeast Valley Invitational.

The Jaguar finished the race in 18:24 as Trevin Suhr from ACGC was the individual champion.

Aaron Lursen of St. Edmond finished sixth and Oscar Hanson of Southeast Valley finished 10th.

Suhr’s performance helped second place (Class 1A) ACGC win the team title, followed by No. 5 (1A) Ogden, 11th (1A) St. Edmond, Southeast Valley and 20th (1A) Manson Northwest Webster.

“I’m just grateful that we got the meeting and had the great weather we had this morning when we discussed about having it between the heat and the risk of storms.” That said SV head coach Travis Nuss. “I am very satisfied with the performance of our teams. Almost all of our returnees set their best times for this course.

“I’m really excited about the quality and size of our get-together so it’s really exciting for our boys to finish fourth so early in the season.”

South Central Calhoun finished sixth, while Perry, East Sac County, Clarion-Goldfield / Dows and Woodward Academy rounded out the team standings.

“We knew it would be a good test for us to start the season with the teams here and what they needed to come back.” That said SEHS head coach Mike Szalat. “ACGC is very good and very young, so they will be contenders for a while. Ogden is also very good and very young, but I was happy with our competition.

“We have some experience now and the guys know how to race and what to expect from them.”

In the Gaels, too, Ronnie Orres took 13th place, Hayden Mayer 19th, Liam Shannon 26th, Drew Szalat 27th and Thomas Cosgrove 29th place.

“As a newcomer, Liam had a really nice first race.” said Szalat. “Hayden and Drew did a good job moving up. Aaron is kind of an anomaly in our program because he can go out quick and stick it out. “

Braydon Smith was 42nd, Dane Hanrahan 51st, Sam Mericle 55th, Zach Loerts 60th, Carter Rial 66th, Joe Dawson 72nd and Casten Wacholtz 77.

At the head of Manson Northwest Webster was Carson Widlund, who came in 18th, and Lane Moline, who came in 22nd. Thade Lachelt took 28th place.

For East Sac County, Parker Engel finished 20th and Christopher Greenfield led Clarion-Goldfield / Dows through the intersection in 24th place.

Tyler Lightner finished 25th for South Central Calhoun.

ACGC had a strong night, placing four in the top 9 and all five in the top 11. Justin Reinhart was fifth, Gavin Sloss eighth and Andrew Mahaffey ninth.

Ogden had Payton VanSickle third, Carson VanSickle fourth and Jordan King seventh.

The Gael return to Webster City on Tuesday.
