John Wesley Powell Painting Contest winners announced | People

SWEETWATER COUNTY – The Sweetwater County Historical Museum has announced the winners of its John Wesley Powell children’s painting competition. Winners included Adaline Parker, Lincoln Parker and Harlow Parker of Green River, Dean and Decker Hardley of Mountain View, and Aria Hepworth, who lives in Idaho and was visiting her family in Green River when the competition was announced.

Each received a $ 10 gift certificate from the museum’s gift shop as a prize.

Museum staff launched the competition to commemorate the anniversaries of John Wesley Powell’s two 1,000-mile expeditions, 1869 and 1871, to the Green Rivers, Colorado Rivers and Grand Canyon, both from Expedition Island in May Green river.

A bronze statue of Powell greets visitors to the museum at 3 E. Flaming Gorge Way in Green River. The colored contestants were a sketch of the Powell statue drawn by the museum’s director, Dave Mead.

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.
