Jonathan Menéndez Arrives In Utah, Rubio Rubin Inks New Long Term Deal With Real Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Real Salt Lake has been busy lately. The general manager announced that Argentine winger Jonathan Menéndez has arrived in Utah, while also informing RSL fans that striker Rubio Rubin has signed a new long-term deal with the club.

The announcement was made on the local radio station ESPN 700 with host Spence Checketts.

Jonathan Diego Menendez

Menéndez, 27, was officially signed with RSL on May 29, but has been patiently waiting for the Argentine government to approve his immigration documents for a month.

Eventually Menéndez was given permission to travel north to Utah and arrived at Salt Lake City International Airport today.

“I actually met him at the airport a few hours ago,” said Fall. “He’s resting comfortably in a hotel and going through his medical and everything tomorrow.”

Fall also stated that the front office is now actively looking for more players this season. At this point, however, he’s been in business long enough to know that the unexpected may at any moment.

As the season progresses and results and games pile up, changes may be required. Players can be sold or released and acquisitions can be made. But for now, RSL fans can rest easy knowing that the current roster is in place and the front office has no plans to change this immediately.

Rubio Rubin is here to stay

“We went to him a few weeks ago and said we wanted to renew your contract and improve the conditions to really make Rubio a home,” said Fall. “The deal will keep him here for up to four years beyond this year, it’s a long-term deal and we’re very excited to keep him in an RSL kit for some time.”

Rubin joined RSL from USL club San Diego Loyal during the off season. This season Rubin has played 11 games, including 10 in the starting XI, while also adding four goals and two assists during that time.

In addition, Rubin has had a positive impact on the playgroup and the team’s culture. Fall admitted that his ability to interact with everyone in the club and be a positive light to his teammates gave the front office more reasons to secure Rubin’s long-term future.

Further details of the transaction were not disclosed.
