Kyle Whittingham is ‘closer’ to finding Utah’s lead running back

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kyle Whittingham and the Utah offense are on the verge of regaining their lead following their season opener win against Weber state.

At the start of the season, Utah had a four-man race for the front running back place, including Micah Bernard, Tavion Thomas, TJ Pledger and Chris Curry.

Now that the first game is on the books, Kyle Whittingham feels like they’re getting closer and closer to their lead.

“Yeah, well closer,” Whittingham said at his weekly press conference on Monday. “Tavion Thomas obviously had a good game production, although as we mentioned after the game, the fiddling was the big minus, but you know he’s working hard to correct that. Micah Bernard played well and you know everyone contributed to the running back position in some way, but I think Tavion was the one who stood out the most. “

In Utah’s 40-17 win over Weber State, Thomas finished with 12 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Micah Bernard ran the ball six times for 35 yards while catching three passes for 41 yards. TJ Pledger had two rush attempts for 10 yards and was only thrown once, but he dropped the ball on a possible touchdown. Chris Curry had three carries for eight yards.

Utah will turn its attention to state rival BYU on Saturday, September 11 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. Kick-off is at 8:15 p.m. MDT on ESPN.
