Local animal shelter in St. George steps up to help fire victims

ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) – It has been two weeks since the fire on Diagonal Street in St. George hit two homes and four lots.

Surveillance footage from Sylvia Wasden’s house, one of the completely destroyed houses, shows a stable with 12 chickens that quickly caught fire on May 21st. Three of Sylvia’s dogs were rescued by the St. George Police, but their chickens weren’t that lucky.

“Nobody knew there were chickens, nobody thought they were there, after the fire was out we were home, we always thought we just had to go home and see,” says Katherine Szewczyk, Sylvia’s daughter.

Szewczyk says Kelli, the owner of RSQ Dogs in St. George, a local animal shelter, stepped in and offered to rehabilitate those who made it.

“I was just overwhelmed because it’s such a big responsibility that it makes the difference to call someone and just say, ‘Are you okay? Do you have everything you need? Do you know what can we do? ‘”Says Szewczyk.

And again and again help came from the church in southern Utah.

“Out of the blue, people you haven’t spoken to since high school write, ‘Can we bring some gift cards for your mom and sister and whoever needs to get clothes,’ because you know them? have nothing, ”says Szewczyk.

A GoFundMe raised over $ 10,000.
