Man arrested for stabbing another man inside Pioneer Park

SALT LAKE CITY — A 21-year-old man was arrested Friday after he allegedly stabbed a 30-year-old man in Pioneer Park.

“This incident does not appear to be a random assault,” read a Friday evening press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

It all began at approximately 4:50 pm when SLC911 received information about a person bleeding at Pioneer Park.

When officers arrived on scene, police said they found the victim inside the park with a stab wound.

While some officers provided the victim with first aid, others started checking the park for evidence, witnesses and the suspect.

“Community members directed officers to a man walking through the park,” the release stated.

Police said officers stopped the man, later identified as Mahat Osman, and took him into custody.

The suspect in this case is identified as a 21-year-old man.

This does not appear to be a random attack.

The suspect is charged with one count of aggravated assault.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, was then transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

“Gold Cross also transported the suspect to the hospital for minor injuries that occurred prior to arrest,” the release stated.

Osman has since been released, according to police, and is in the process of being booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, where he will be charged with one count of aggravated assault.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears this was an isolated incident between Osman and the victim.”

According to the release, witnesses told officers the two men were in a verbal argument just before the stabbing occurred.

Police said officers did find a knife after searching the park.
