SALT LAKE CITY — A domestic violence incident early Saturday morning led to a SWAT team response, and Salt Lake police say they took a man into custody.
Officers responded to an apartment on the 500 block of Dexter Street after a 911 call at 3:24 am reported the sound of at least one gunshot, according to a news release from Salt Lake police. They set up a perimeter and started checking the area.
Police eventually learned two men tried kicking in the door of an apartment and someone inside fought back.
“It appears … to be an ongoing domestic violence-related argument between the parties involved,” the police statement says.
Officers later found one of the individuals had shot through an apartment window. No one was hurt directly from the shooting; however, there were injuries from the initial fight.
Officers followed a trail of blood to another apartment unit in the same complex. While watching the apartment, they saw one individual exit the apartment and then go back inside. After multiple commands, a 31-year-old man came out and was taken into custody and given medical care at about 4 am
The man and the victim are related to each other, police said.
Because officers believed another person was inside, they requested assistance from Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators around 4:50 am
Just before 6 am, police closed North Dexter Street between 500 North and 600 North and asked that community members avoid using streets in the area.
The apartment unit was searched without incident, and at 7:19 am they ended the search without finding a second suspect, the police statement says.
Saturday morning, detectives responded to the scene to help with the investigation. Police are considering appropriate charges and working to confirm the identity of the person who likely left the area before they arrived.
