OGDEN – The indictments filed on Monday provided more details about a confrontation last week in which an Ogden police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly threatened a woman with a knife and then approached the police officer.

Weber County prosecutors tried Casey Pacheco, 32, in the 2nd District Court for second degree assault against a peace officer and a Class A misconduct involving a dangerous weapon in a fight.

Police arrested Pacheco on Saturday after being discharged from a local hospital where he was treated for two gunshot wounds in Ogden on Wednesday afternoon. He was being held in the Weber County Jail without bail.

A district attorney’s investigator said in a probable cause statement that Pacheco allegedly “waved a large knife and walked towards the officer when an Ogden officer arrived to check an emergency call about a man putting a knife on a woman’s throat held”. The officer withdrew and drew his pistol, fearing for his safety, the affidavit says.

According to Witnesses – Police said they interviewed several construction workers and others nearby who said they had the incident at Block 200 on Jan.

“Pacheco had the knife on his own throat and was going back and forth unpredictably,” the affidavit said. “Pacheco yelled at the officer: ‘You have to kill me.'”

Pacheco allegedly approached the officer, took a few steps back in the other direction, and then turned back to the officer. “Pacheco still held the knife up to his neck, but yelled at the officer and moved threateningly towards him,” the affidavit said. “The officer believed that Pacheco intended to further reduce the distance between them and then stab him with the knife and kill him.”

As Pacheco got closer, the officer fired and the man dropped the knife. At a press conference Thursday, Ogden Police Chief Eric Young said the officer shot four times and hit Pacheco twice.

The officer was taken on paid leave pending an investigation, which is a common practice when an officer uses lethal force. Weber County’s Critical Incident team is investigating the use of deadly force and Pacheco’s involvement.
