Margaret Jane Todd Benson – St George News

December 16, 1920 – June 8, 2021

Well she made it to 100! Margaret Jane Todd Benson peacefully graduated into Heavenly Realms on June 8, 2021 in Springdale, Utah. She was born on December 16, 1920 in Ogden, Utah, to Elizabeth Baker and Walter Henry Todd. Services will be simple and held in the LDS Church Relief Society room, 1584 Zion Park Blvd., Springdale, Utah, Saturday, June 12, at 11 am

As a young girl, Margaret longed to make music, so she asked her father for a piano. Since he couldn’t afford one, he swept out the local piano dealer’s shop for over a year to swap an old piano for his gifted ‘darling girl’. This piano is cherished by Margaret’s children as a reminder of their grandfather’s sacrifice and the music their mother filled their lives with.

From 12 to 92 years old she accompanied countless choirs, plays and soloists in church, school, at home and in the community and brought out the best in others by offering her talent in the shadows so that they could sing and shine.

A master of witty repartee, clever comeback, and jingling ivory, Margaret enjoyed her time at Utah State University majoring in business. Despite getting high grades, she went to great lengths to collect memories, especially meeting and hypnotizing Theodore (Ted) Nelson Benson. They were sealed in Logan Temple in their senior year. Their love was deep and lasting and challenged. They now enjoy the wonderful and solve the rest with all eternity before them and spiritual winds in their sails.

Since Ted was a career officer in the Army, Margaret moved every few years while raising three girls. It was rich and rewarding to experience the goodness of Brazil, Virginia, California, Okinawa, and the many other places where army life was introduced to their little family.

This really should be one of those clever and hilarious obituaries in honor of a woman with so much wit, verve, and vivacity, but unfortunately the only person I know who could help me create something like this is she, who this obituary is for is written.

Margaret and Ted eventually retired to Springdale, where they were blessed with a warm and remarkable, even holy (yes, you are!), Caring and compassionate fellowship. After Ted died, Margaret enjoyed having her eldest daughter around and her youngest living with her, and both of them catered to every need and whim.

This selfless sacrifice of their own “needs and whims,” though they do not consider it such, is recorded in the heavenly annals and in the hearts of all who know of their ceaseless service. Several carers helped Margaret’s daughters with a potentially overwhelming responsibility. Kayla, Sheila, Nancy and Catherine are deeply grateful for their commitment, their humor, their patience, their skills and their love.

Comforted in the knowledge that this separation is temporary, remain those who remain: their children Kristen Benson, Elizabeth (Jim) Cutler, and Carolinda Benson; Grandson, Noel (Suzette) Benson, Emily Anne Cutler, and Matthew Benson Todd Cutler; Sister Joyce (Louis) Notarianni stand on this side of the veil and tearfully bid farewell, while her ancestors in death: her siblings Frantzen (Gertrude) Todd and Arlene (Ollie) Patterson; Parents, Elizabeth and Walter Todd; and eternal companion, Ted, cheerfully exclaim, “Here she comes!”

Arrangements are made on the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George, Utah, 435-673-2454. Friends and family are invited to sign Margaret’s online guest book at www.spilsburymortuary.com.
