Mary Louise Henscheid was born on November 18, 1938 in Rupert, Idaho, the fifth of seven children of William and Mary Henscheid. The family was very active in the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas. Born in Idaho’s first family flower and nursery business, she grew up surrounded by flowers and plants of all kinds. She has been in school affairs such as Girl’s League, GAA Thespians, Pep Club, Pep Band, Music Club, Ski Club, and Quill and Scroll active. She wrote several plays, including a radio script that took first place in the state. She was also in Campfire Girls and spent summers with her sisters at Camp Neewahlu in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In 1957 she graduated from high school.

After high school, Mary Lou spent some time serving the Holy Spirit of Eternal Worship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1961 she graduated from St. Mary’s College in Kansas, a college where many of her sisters and nieces received their college education. In 2011, out of love for college, she organized and hosted the 50th class reunion of her class. She made a career as a middle school teacher teaching in both Portland, Oregon and Rupert, Idaho, and shared her passion for outside of the classroom education as a Boy Scout Leader.

Ed Borrowman courted and married Mary Lou after they were introduced on a blind double date. They married on July 2, 1964, their parents’ 35th wedding anniversary and their mother’s birthday. After they got married, they spent time at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, back in Rupert, and then moved to Arco, Idaho, where they spent the next 50 years. They raised three children and were members of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Mary Lou loved staying home, attended countless school events, and supported her children in many activities. Mary Lou was also known for caring for home-shackled seniors, serving as a substitute teacher, leading youth and boy scout troops, and volunteering in her community. In 2014, Mary Lou and Ed celebrated their 75th birthday and 50th wedding anniversary with a big party and trip to Glacier National Park with their siblings, all hosted by their children.

After Ed passed away in November 2017, Mary Lou was able to enjoy meals on wheels with the support and love of her caregivers (Nancy and Mark Fitch, Steve Pierson, Pat McDonald, and Lyn Amos), her parish, the Sr. Citizens Center, and food on wheels. As she became more physically vulnerable, she moved to Salem, Oregon in October 2020. During her final months, she was amazingly and lovingly cared for at Tierra Rose who was close to her eldest son James and his wife Teresa. They visited her through windows as often as possible during Covid. When Mary Lou went to the hospice, her children could be with her in person for the last month of their lives and be there when she died.

Mary Lou valued simple joys. She liked the color yellow and loved yellow roses. She also had simple desires. She was born on November 18th, two days after her two sisters’ consecutive birthdays on the 16th and 17th, and when asked for a year what she would like for her birthday, she said she would like her very own birthday cake . which she got every year thereafter for the rest of her life.
