Miami Football agrees to a series on which BYU suffered a memorable 1990 loss

The Miami soccer team announced Thursday that they would be welcoming Brigham Young in 2026 and traveling to Provo, Utah in 2028. The Hurricanes had a memorable home in 1988 and 1990, and a home with the Cougars. Miami defeated BYU 41-17 in 1988 but suffered a memorable 28-21 loss to Provo in 1990.

BYU’s 1990 win essentially started the successful Heisman Trophy campaign for Ty Detmer. Detmer was 38-54 for 406 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Miami traveled west as the defending champions. Miami was unable to turn five BYU sales into one win.

The trip to Provo will be the more western route the Miami soccer program will travel as a loss in Washington in 2000 sparked a path to winning the 2001 National Championship. BYU finished 2020 with 11: 1. The Cougars are led by Kalani Sitake, who is 38-26 years old in five seasons. The Cougars improved from 7-6 in the previous two seasons.

Miami Dolphins fans can see former Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson in the NFL. Wilson was voted second overall by rival New York Jets in the 2021 NFL draft. Detmer had a 14-year NFL career but made only 25 career starts from 1996-1999 and 2001. BYU and Miami had a legacy of QBs in the 1970s and 1980s.

BYU has been independent since leaving the Mountain West Conference after the 2010 season. In all sports except football, BYU is a member of the West Coast Conference. The WCC does not offer football. Miami now has three non-conference games scheduled for the 2026 and 2028 seasons.

As previously mentioned, Miami will host Florida A&M on September 12, 2026, BYU will travel to South Carolina on September 19 and an indefinite date in 2026. The 2026 game against the Gamecocks is the first half of a home game. Miami will host South Carolina on September 11, 2027. Miami last played against South Carolina in 2014.

In 2028, Miami is slated to play in BYU on September 2, South Florida on the 9th, and Notre Dame on an unspecified date. Miami vs. USF is part of a three-game series between 2025 and 2028. Miami will play Notre Dame seven times between 2024 and 2037.
