Mistake brings Ogden down, Raptors lose 13-10 to the opening series in Grand Junction | Ogden raptors

In a game that featured 19 of the 23 total runs in the second and third innings, it was a field error that doomed the Ogden Raptors, who fell 13-10 in the first of six games against the Grand Junction Rockies, Colorado.

The Raptors are now 4-9 in their last 13 games and the aspiring Rockies are 8-2 in their last 10 games and now have the best overall record in the Pioneer League South Division.

Grand Junction former Rockies player Owen Taylor gave Ogden (30-22, 1-3 2nd half) a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a double homer.

The Rockies (30-21, 4-0) quickly responded in the lower part of the second when two doppelgangers from Nate Scantlin and Luke Roskam gave Grand Junction a 5-2 lead.

Ogden took the lead back at the top of the third when Taylor was hit by a pitch with loaded bases, then Jack Johnson later tripled a 6-5 advantage in two runs.

With an out in the bottom third, Austin Elder separated Josh Elvir for a 6-6 tie.

It could have been a tie when the next batter, Kelvin Maldonado, landed first in the middle with a runner on the ground. Ogden shortstop Pavin Parks was half a step from second base when the ball arrived – a custom double-play ball to end the inning – but Parks fiddled with it and the inning continued.

Scantlin followed with a two-run triple, Frankie Jezioro – who was released by the Raptors earlier this season – hit a two-run homer, and Elvir hit a two-run homer. The game was already decided 13-6.

When Colt Mink offered a great 4 2/3 middle relief for Ogden – and allowed a deserved run after starter Reza Aleaziz allowed seven deserved runs in 2 1/3 innings – the Raptors held the ball game in the fifth inning when Chuck Steele cleared loaded Bases with a triple and then scored on a single by Josh Broughton for 13-10.

Ogden got two runners on the base in the eighth and ninth innings, but ultimately did not threaten a draw.

Broughton hit 3 for 5 to lead the Raptors at the plate while Taylor went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs.

League top hitter David Maberry hit 2 for 5 and slapped a hard single left to start Ogden’s rally in the third, expanding his hitting streak to 27 games and getting him closer to the all-time league record of 32.

Scantlin, Jezioro and Elvir each had three hits for GJ, with Scantlin scoring a total of one double and two triples.

The two teams will continue the series on Thursday at 6.40 p.m.
