MUSIC PICKS: JUN 1 – 7 | Music Picks | Salt Lake City

July Van Sessions with BRUE, The Proper Way, Cory Mon
The first Friday of the month is reserved for the First Friday Art Stroll in downtown Ogden, and for music lovers there are the Banyan Collectives Van Sessions among all the offers. The Van Sessions take place at The Monarch, Ogden’s multifunctional event center that hosts much of the area’s arts and entertainment sectors. Van Sessions is a live audience podcast inviting artists from the local area and further afield to every First Friday Art Stroll at the Banyan Collective’s “Tan Van,” and this upcoming line-up is reason enough to check out the streets of Ogden. Three artists are planned for the evening from 7 p.m. with Cory Mon, who will stage Ogden’s The Proper Way at 8 p.m. The latter act fits in perfectly with another music column from Northern Utah – this time, however, it appears in a slightly different direction than usual. Sammy Brue will appear in an obvious rebranding at 9 pm with his apparently new project BRUE. Alluding to the fact that he recently left his label on social media, it seems that Brue is reinventing himself in BRUE and the two bandmates who round off the trio. BRUE has been teasing new music all spring, so this is a great opportunity to see Sammy Brue’s new tunes at a seemingly crucial time in the young artist’s almost lifelong career. First Friday Art The walk starts at 6pm and the van session is free.

For the Fourth of July freaks
While fireworks shows aren’t a guarantee – given our somewhat hot, dry, and dangerous climate – there are some events where you can enjoy drinks, food, sunburn, and a blur of red, white, and blue-clad bodies. The blocks will host their 4th of July celebration at The Gateway, which of course features all the things of a traditional summer game like court games, face painting, art and competitions, but for music seekers a karaoke stage, DJs and bands all day on Sunday 4th . July. The festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. and those who want to ride the area can claim $ 1 GREENbike rides between July 3rd and July 7th. For the more northerly, there’s Riverton Town The Days that started in late June, but for the July 4th weekend revelers, things start on July 1st with a carnival and car show, and with a parade, movie night and the first music of the Saturday weekend the Riverton City Park stage via Joe Friday. The Saturday is celebrated (since July 4th falls on a Sunday this year, folks) and along with all the other festivities, music will be played from the stage at various points throughout the day. Acts include the Standard Deviation Band at 12:30 p.m., The Ravens Band at 2:00 p.m., Southern Punch Band at 4:00 p.m., Waiting for James Band at 6:00 p.m., Matt Newman at 7:30 p.m., and Wildwood with Chad Truman at 8:30 p.m. This is now a summershindig. Telluride Meltdown’s newest album Powder Day
While it’s now July, fans of Utah’s biggest (if hardly any nowadays) snow on earth always have a good powder day in the back of their minds. So, for snowboarders or skiers who just can’t stop longing for their favorite time of year this summer, check out local band Telluride Meltdown’s latest album, Powder Day, which was released on June 4th. The eight track album actually begins with stoked brooding on a blessed powder day, beginning with a sound clip of a winter storm warning, and topped off with Red Hot Chili Peppers-esque spitting across the driveway, clearing the ice and up the canyon. Other notable pieces on the album are “Floating Down the River” which is not as calm as the title suggests, but rather as a hodgepodge of classical movements, marches and builds and builds. There’s also the up-to-date, fun track called “Dogs Be Lovin ‘covid”, which is about a dog who is very happy to have its owner at home because it “has never had so much action behind its ears” . “Sweet Lily Zombie Eyes” is the rockiest track on the album, complete with dark, crushing guitar lines and even a slightly psychedelic breakdown into a stroll before revisiting the crazy energy of those zombie eyes. The same kind of psych-rock bias is found on the ending “An Open Road” which is a pretty great track to end an album with such a range, from the ironic moments to the boisterous ones. Listen to the album on Spotify.

Heartbreaker revives indie dance music of the 2010s
While older generations fondly remembered hair metal or stadium concerts or saw Nirvana in a basement in Seattle before they got famous, millennials are approaching the age where we have our own memories. For example, many are likely to realize that the blog-era indie rock we grew up with is a thing of the past and may not be as underground today as it was when we first hit Tumblr -Link felt. Step into Heartbreaker, a new dance party in the Urban Lounge that premieres July 3rd and features the sounds of the early 2010s. Even a sleepyhead could probably guess which artists are spun off the DJ deck – Passion Pit, for example. Otherwise, people can look forward to dancing to Justice, catching some Liztomania from Phoenix, feeling the electrical feel of MGMT, and maybe even walking on a dream while listening to Empire of the Sun. If you don’t understand these word games, this dance party is not for you. Other 2010s favorites that are spun are Hot Chip, Chromeo, The Killers, MSTRKRFT, Foals, Rüfüs Du Sol, Classixx, Miike Snow, Cvrches, Daft Punk, Bloc Party, Rac, Peter, Bjorn & John, The Rapture and many more. While some of them debuted a little earlier in the millennium, they are all still the soundtrack of the early years of every millennium, whether it was the years of adolescence or young adulthood. Doors are late on Saturday, July 3rd at 9:00 p.m. and tickets are a whopping $ 5 at theurbanloungeslc.com. Go there and dance your way clean.

SYDNEY TAKESHTA

Lindsey Stirling at the USANA Amphitheater
While she has fans all over the world, Lindsey Stirling certainly has enough Utah fans to give her some degree of Utah music royal status. Stirling is more mistaken about “famous pop artists who happen to be Mormons” than the other way around, and that’s probably more of what gives her a following here in Utah. Her mix of violin with peppy pop leanings and her great, spectacular performances have made her popular around the world, but she has made her name elsewhere through appearances on America’s Got Talent, competitions in Dancing With the Stars, and as a co-writer New York Times bestseller with her sister in The Only Pirate at the Party. Stirling is also soon returning to Utah with fresh new songs as she tours her latest album Artemis, released in 2019, the fifth in her acclaimed discography. The 35-day tour for Artemis will visit Stirling on July 10th at the USANA Amphitheater with the support of electro-pop artist Kiesza. Tickets for the show range from $ 29 to $ 199. VIP packages include interactive activities curated by Stirling, immersive experiences with memorabilia and costumes from past tours, and more. Visit lindseystirling.com/tour for details and ticket links.
