Nonprofit Ogden helps homeless people during the heatwave

OGDEN, Utah – While Utah continues to grapple with record heat, outreach support teams from Youth Futures are providing cold water, food, and information on where the homeless can cool off.

“The biggest concern is just making sure people stay cool and healthy because the heat can be really bad for your health, especially if you don’t go out like most people: go to your air-conditioned home” , Glenn Brainerd said.

Brainerd is a street outreach supporter for the nonprofit Youth Futures in Ogden.

“We give people two to three waters, but if it’s particularly hot you can go through it right away and you will run out of water and become dehydrated,” he said.

A spokesperson for @OgdenCityUtah tells me that the city of Weber County has ever activated a refrigeration center for the general population – why? Because they never needed it. Now they want to change that because we are dealing with record heat. @ fox13 pic.twitter.com/ROOzoQleKa

Both the Lantern House and the Ogden Rescue Mission provide a cool place for the homeless when the temperatures are high enough, an Ogden city spokesman said.

“You have to hope that the cooling centers are open and long enough that you can actually cool off,” said Brainerd.

The city of Ogden nor Weber County have ever activated a refrigeration center for the general population, said Mike McBride, city spokesman. Now that the heat continues, leaders are considering possible ways to change that.

“We’re seeing much bigger weather shifts that we need to be better prepared for at a higher level rather than just trying local organizations to put something together and do their best,” said Brainerd.
