Northern Colorado Eagles split games against Provo Predators – Greeley Tribune

The Northern Colorado Eagles junior hockey team won a game and lost a game to the Provo Predators this past weekend at the Greeley Ice Haus.

Just six days before the first of two games against Provo, Eagles goaltender Charles-Anthony Barbeau coughed up six goals on 26 shots in a Oct. 8 loss to Pueblo, an experience that stuck with and motivated the netminder.

“Barbs brought it all week in practice and was determined to bounce back from a tough performance last weekend versus Pueblo,” said Steve Haddon, head coach of the Eagles junior hockey team.

Boy, did he ever.

Barbeau pitched a 30-save shutout, and four different Eagles goal-scorers made the difference on Friday night, as Northern Colorado shut down the visiting Provo Predators en route to a 4-0 victory.

A day later, NoCo goaltender Ulrik Roussel made a season-high 41 saves on 43 shots, but the Eagles offense fell flat as Provo blanked NoCo 2-0.

Provo improved to 2-2-0, while NoCo fell to 6-4-0.

On Saturday, Predators forward Gion Coray received a tape-to-tape pass and squeaked a wrist shot through the five-hole on Roussel to put Provo in front 1-0 with 4:02 remaining in the first period.

Just less than five minutes into the third period, the Eagles got their best opportunity of the night when Predator defenseman Jackson Schaefer had to serve a double-minor for high sticking and NoCo got four minutes on the power play. Nate Jaramillo was inches away from tying the game when his one-timer from the near point pinged the goalpost and caromed out with 12:22 left in the third period.

Predators winger Misha Mshar would have the Eagles rue their missed chances when he fired the puck from behind the NoCo net, banked it off Roussel, and gave Provo a 2-0 lead with 3:24 left in the game.
