Pastor Assignments Take Effect Aug. 3: Fr. Gustavo Vidal

Fr. Gustavo Vidal was born in Zarzal, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. He studied biochemistry for a year at the University of Santiago de Cali, then entered the seminary of Valmaria and the Community Houses of the Minute of God of the Eudist Fathers in Bogotá. After two years there, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Salt Lake City and entered Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Ore. On June 28, 1997 he was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of the Madeleine by the Most Rev. George H. Niederauer, eighth Bishop of Salt Lake City.

Fr. Vidal has ministered in several parishes in the diocese: St. Joseph in Ogden, the cathedral, St. Francis of Assisi in Orem, St. Elizabeth Parish and its missions in central Utah, St. George Parish in St. George, San Pablo Mission at Beryl Junction, St. Mary Parish in West Haven, and most recently at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Magna. He also has served as dean of the Wasatch Deanery and on the diocesan Presbyteral Council, the Staff Council and on the diocesan liturgy committee. In addition, he is a diocesan consultant. On Aug. 3 he will begin his new assignment as pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Layton.

What would you like your new parishioners to know about you?

I have two white Labradors.

What are you looking forward to most about your new assignment?

Working with both the Anglo and Hispanic communities.

As a priest, what has been your greatest challenge?

Being away from home – Colombia.

As a priest, what has been your most satisfying experience?

Serving God’s people.
