Police: Man with body armor and explosives arrested at Uintah County home

UINTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) – Police arrested a man Tuesday who allegedly had explosives and body armor at his Uintah County home.

A statement about a likely reason said officers responded to an attack on a house on the 3000 block of Vernal Ave.

When officers arrived on site, they found a drunk man who said another man identified as Michael Dallas Rowley pulled out a 22-caliber rifle and threatened him. The man told police that Rowley had “created a hidden room under the residence where he may have hidden other firearms.”

A probable cause explanation said that MPs were “familiar” with Rowley and knew that he had already had multiple criminal convictions that would make it illegal for him to own a firearm.

MPs later went back inside to speak to Rowley, who denied threatening the other man, claiming he was threatened with a knife. Officers then searched Rowley and found a .22 caliber cartridge in his pocket, according to an explanation of the likely cause. He was then taken into custody

The officers then spoke to other people in the house and smelled marijuana from inside the house. A search warrant was then obtained to search the house.

When the house was searched, a possible cause was stated that “gunpowder, pyrotechnics, and materials (pipe fittings, BBs, washers) possibly related to the construction of explosive devices were found inside.”

The officers continued to search the house and found body armor in the bedroom closet and “a hidden door to access the crawl space under the floor.” According to a statement on the probable cause, the body armor belonged to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, which was officially “marked for use in the department’s firearms area.”

Officers also found “a large amount” of ammunition, along with drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Rowley was arrested for possession of explosives, chemicals or incendiary devices or parts, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon by a disabled person, endangering the child, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and theft by obtaining stolen property.

He was later sent to Uintah County Jail
