OGDEN – Prosecutors have charged an Ogden man with a second degree crime that caused a disaster for allegedly dropping tire-popping spikes in homes where he thought people poured too much during the drought.

Aaron Eng, 37, was summoned in the 2nd District Court Monday, December 8th. Weber County Prosecutor’s Office charged Eng on Friday with the felony and Class B offenses of possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

Ogden Police detectives said in loading documents that police had received reports over the summer of vehicle tires from residents in the Jaycee Park and 25th area. Police said they knew of 18 people who had spiked tires Some had become irreparable as police prevented suspects from escaping. Two local tire dealers also reported repairing studded tires. The total damage was $ 4,300.

A local resident gave police nine spikes that he found in his driveway in August and September.

In early September, police received a surveillance video showing a man wearing a felt hat walking a dog that dropped a thorn into a driveway. Police said they identified Eng as the man on the video. They went to his house and saw a dog that looked like the one on the video. Eng denied knowing about any spikes, but when confronted with the surveillance tape, he allegedly said, “It looks like my dog,” a police statement said on the likely cause.

Police received a search warrant and said they found eight purchases for a total of 170 Caltrop spikes on Eng’s Amazon account. Police said they found 42 spikes in the house, a felt hat and shoes that match those on the video, plus 30 grams of marijuana and a pipe.

Eng later reportedly told officers that he dropped spikes on driveways because he felt that “people were using too much water when we were all in a drought,” the indictment states.

Eng’s attorney, Craig Chlarson, did not immediately respond to a phone message.
