Provo fire crews on scene of fire at Bicentennial Park | Provo News

Firefighters have been working on a fire that broke out around Bicentennial Park in southeast Provo on Wednesday.

The fire call came around 5:05 p.m. that there was a grass fire between 1440 S. State Street and Bicentennial Park, battalion chief Lynn Schofield said.

Precautionary evacuation has been set up for some homes south of the park and for the Park Veterinary Hospital, Schofield said.

Schofield said that several acres were on fire and there were some outbuildings, an abandoned car, and a RV in the area.

“There are no casualties and the cause of the fire is still being investigated,” said Schofield.

Provo had all units on site Wednesday night, as well as assistance from the Springville, Orem, and Utah Counties fire departments.

“The fire is contained, but we are still controlling and mopping up,” said Schofield at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night. “We’ll be here for many hours. The clean-up is significant.”

Schofield noted that the incident was a good reminder of how dry the grasses and trees are even in the city.

“The entire state of Utah is flammable,” he said.

“We’re seeing fire behavior in late July,” said Schofield. “Please be careful and watch out for anything that could give off sparks, such as low chains on trucks.”

Schofield also warned about fireworks and using wisdom all summer long, which is apparently the driest ever.
