Salt Lake City City Council recently decided to adopt two new development standards between the International Code Council and the Modular Building Institute that set out best practices for off-site construction.

ICC / MBI Standard 1200: Standard for Off-Site Construction: Planning, Design, Manufacturing and Assembly and ICC / MBI Standard 1205: Standard for Off-Site Construction: Inspection and regulatory compliance provide minimum requirements and safeguards for safety off-site, public health and welfare, and standards for regulatory compliance and local inspection processes.

“We applaud the Salt Lake City Council for making this important advance with the 1200 and 1205 standards,” said Dominic Sims, CEO of the Code Council, CBO. “Given the great economic and safety benefits of off-site construction, it is of paramount importance to Salt Lake City’s efforts to meet critical needs for safe, sustainable, and affordable buildings and communities.”

The Code Council and MBI designed their new standards to ease the burden of providing affordable housing and to help jurisdictions meet their sustainability and safety at work goals. This will ensure communities can benefit from off-site efficiency gains in accordance with local building and safety codes, according to the Code Council and MBI.

“The lack of affordable housing is a crisis that cities across the country are facing,” said Amy Fowler, chairwoman of Salt Lake City Council. “This would allow the city to add another housing stock that can be quick, affordable and accessible. It offers more flexibility in the modular building construction process and helps remove one of the barriers to building tiny houses. “

The newly adopted standards should be completed by mid-2021.
