  • Gordon Huether’s “The Canyon” is one of 100 large format community artworks from around the world that has been nominated for the People’s Choice CODAaward – an annual award given to “remarkable works that successfully integrate art into interiors, architecture and public spaces” , is awarded. according to a press release sent to Deseret News.
  • With a budget of $ 5 million, Huether and the architecture firm HOK tried to create an indoor canyon in the new airport, which opened in September 2020.
  • As a lead artist, Huether brought the shapes and ridges of Utah’s canyons to life along the airport walls. “The main goal was to bring the outside in and give visitors to Utah a sense of place,” says codaworx.com.
  • “The Canyon” is the “centerpiece art installation” of Salt Lake City International Airport, reported the Deseret News. As part of the Salt Lake City Airport Redevelopment Program, “Canyon 2.0” will be installed in a hall that will be completed in 2024 according to codaworx.com.
  • However, “The Canyon” and “Canyon 2.0” will not be Hüther’s only works at the airport. The “River Tunnel,” another Utah-inspired piece with blue lights and water sound effects, spans a future 990-foot tunnel that will connect the halls, the Deseret News reported. Estimated installation date is 2024.
