September 27 data: 23 additional deaths reported in Utah; almost 3,200 new cases

Utah Department of Health officials said an additional 23 Utahns have died of COVID-19 since the numbers were reported before the weekend. Another 3,176 people tested positive for the virus and 586 people were hospitalized.

There were 88 deaths in the state last week.

Of the cases reported on Monday, 640 cases were children up to the age of 17.

Among those who died from contracting the virus, 19 were over 65 years of age.

Almost 14,000 other vaccinations were given.

School-age cases

Health officials reported that 640 of the confirmed coronavirus cases in the state were in children aged 17 and younger. They made up 19 percent of all cases since the last report on Friday.

Of these positive cases, 304 were children aged 5 to 10 years. Another 149 cases were in children ages 11 to 13 and there were 187 cases in those ages 14 to 18.

Testing

Health officials reported that 3,425,516 Utah residents were tested for the novel coronavirus.

They said 503,874 residents have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began – an increase of 20,927 cases since the numbers reported on Friday.

Of the most recently reported cases, 1,359 were from Friday, 1,030 from Saturday and 796 from Sunday. In the last week there were just under 9,496 new cases – fewer than the week before.

Another 38,638 people were tested for the virus. Of those tested since Friday, 15.2 percent were positive.

The 7-day rolling average for positive tests was 1,359 per day. The 7-day rolling average for the percentage of laboratory tests positive was 13.8 percent. Including those who were tested more than once, 6,158,381 tests were conducted in the state.

Vaccinations

1,888,540 Utah residents have been given at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Anyone over 12 years of age was eligible for the vaccine.

The state has given 3,430,386 first and second vaccinations. Of those who were vaccinated, 1,677,552 people are fully vaccinated.

According to the health department, 13,885 vaccines have been administered since Friday.

Health officials said 64.7 percent of all Utahns ages 12 and older were fully vaccinated and 72.9 percent had at least one vaccination. Including all Utahners of all ages, 52.3 percent are fully vaccinated.

Over 4 million vaccines have been shipped to the state. Almost 596,000 doses were ready and waiting for those who have yet to be vaccinated. Officials said the state has vaccines from all three approved manufacturers.

The number of people who received a third booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine was not available.

Vaccinated against unvaccinated

Health officials said the risk of dying from COVID-19 was 5.5 times higher in unvaccinated Utahners than vaccinated Utahners in the past 28 days. They also had a 7.8 times higher risk of being hospitalized and a 6.6 times higher risk of testing positive.

Hospital stays

The health department reported that 586 people were treated for COVID-19 in hospitals across the state. Since the pandemic began, 21,911 people have been hospitalized in Utah.

Utah officials said 90.8 percent of the state’s 519 intensive care beds were occupied. Of these, 212 were used by patients confirmed to have COVID-19. Another eight patients in intensive care beds were suspected to have COVID-19 pending further tests.

According to the reported number, there were 436 new hospital admissions in the past week.

Hospital officials in the state said while there were 519 ICU beds in the state, they generally only had 85 percent of those beds.

Deaths

The Utah Department of Health reported 23 additional COVID-19 deaths since Friday. There have been a total of 2,892 deaths from the disease in Utah since the pandemic began.

Health officials have reported deaths in Box Elder, Emery, Salt Lake, Sanpete, Tooele, Uintah, Utah, Washington, and Weber counties.

There was one death in those aged 25 to 44 years and three in those aged 45 to 64 years. There have been 15 COVID-19 deaths among those aged 65 to 84 and four people over the age of 85. Of the 23 deaths, 14 were men.

Two lived in long-term care facilities and two were not hospitalized. The other 19 were treated in hospital.

The identities of those who, according to the state, died of COVID-19 have not been released.
