Short finale: left or right

I was returning to Denver from a mountain and canyon flight in Idaho on a busy Friday afternoon in July for my refueling stop in Vernal, Utah.

The summer monsoon pattern was firmly in place and the weather radar showed some activity across the area.

The early Salt Lake air traffic controllers declined to track flights, so I knew it had to get bad at altitude.

As I flew over northern Utah and southern Wyoming, I became a Salt Lake controller who seemed to have my hands full juggling deviations from the various commercial aircraft in the sector.

After a series of rather lengthy explanations by some pilots who requested deviations from the weather, the rushed pilot made this transmission:

“Okay guys, I don’t need a long explanation, just deviation to the left or right!”
