SLCC : Movie Premiere Paired With Beehive Art Exhibition Closing Night

August 20, 2021

The Salt Lake Community College School of Arts, Communication Media, is sponsoring a double dose of entertainment on September 3 with a new film premiering in Utah for the first time and featuring an artist that is part of an exhibition that ends the same evening .

The film Thuggin ‘A New Generation, directed by Downy Doxey-Marshall, shows the artist and poet MönSr Yusef from Utah. In his art and film, Yusef explores many topics from his life on the street that inspire hope for a united humanity. He uses “Thuggin ‘” to describe people who accept what and who they are and who let nothing or anyone prevent them from achieving their goals. His artistic process uses poetry and images from pop culture, fashion and design to explore the Thuggin generation. The film will be shown in the Grand Theater of the SLCC.

Yusef is also one of several artists featured in the so-called New Beehive Exhibition presented by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums. The exhibition brings together the work of 30 Utah-based artists who illustrate the diversity of artistic expression in visual media and in statewide craft. Artists were invited to create a unique work of art that uses the beehive and the imagery associated with it as a concept, motif or metaphor. The resulting pieces are a collection of deeply personal interpretations of what it means to be based in Beehive State, Utah in the 21st century for those who don’t know. The Grand Beehive was a 1980 exhibit that examined depictions of the beehive symbol in various aspects of Utah culture.

Please note that SLCC officials and event organizers strongly recommend wearing face-covering and practicing social distancing while attending both events.

Access to the Beehive Exhibition on September 3, its closing night, begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m. in the George S. & Delores Doré Eccles Gallery of the SLCC.

The film will be held at a 6-7pm reception in the Edna Runswick Taylor Foyer outside the gallery, followed by its premiere in the theater. The Grand Theater and the Eccles Gallery are located on the SLCC’s South City campus at 1575 South State Street in Salt Lake City.
